“boju weyín is a riveting story of love and loss; an extraordinary debut film by the poet Bimpé Fageyinbo, the story is so honest and personal that, watching it, you feel as if you are eavesdropping — but you can’t look away. Wholly unique, both in the filmmaking and the narration of Fageyinbo’s poetry — boju weyín is a triumphant debut by an extraordinary talent.”

INTERVIEW:

CONVERSATION BETWEEN CULTURAL CRITIC MICHAEL A. GONZALES &

POET BIMPÉ FAGEYINBO

“boju weyín” (2022) is a cinematic meditation on life, art and love inspired by filmmaker Bimpé Fageyinbo’s 2010 autobiographical poetry book “so maybe that’s the bee’s weakness. Fageyinbo delivers a stunning short film that mixes memoir and poetics with arty images that interpret both the romance and solitude of the protagonist. While “boju weyín” can be said to be inspired by filmmakers Julie Dash and Wong Kar-Wai, it’s as beautiful as a Matisse painting and as personal as a diary entry.

Fageyinbo allows both the camera and the audience to linger within her sorrow and solitude, while also giving us a beautiful document of her soul. This wonderful film has been on the film festival circuit and has received much acclaim from audiences nationwide.
